The Portuguese Education Department – Camões, I.P.
It is Camões, I.P.’s responsibility to co-ordinate the teaching of the Portuguese language and culture overseas and to induce interaction between the various levels and methods of teaching whilst encouraging the adoption of Portuguese as part of the school curriculum, particularly in countries with Portuguese-speaking communities.
The Portuguese Education Department – Camões, I.P., located at the Embassy of Portugal in Pretoria, in South Africa, was created in 2006 and is directed at the network of professionals teaching Portuguese abroad, providing them logistical support for the teaching of the Portuguese language and culture.
The Portuguese Education Department – Camões, I.P. is responsible for a teaching network that covers South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Namibia and Zimbabwe, where it is possible to learn Portuguese from pre-school to higher and adult education.
The Portuguese teaching network is present, in five countries, in 50 primary and secondary schools, also guaranteeing the teaching of Portuguese in 9 universities in the region (5 in South Africa, 1 in Botswana, 1 in Eswatini, 1 in Namibia and 1 in Zimbabwe), in addition to promoting several courses for adults.
Currently, in order to extend the offer of teaching to areas not covered by our teaching staff, in addition to seeking to adapt the offer to the current social and educational reality, online synchronous courses are also promoted for students in primary and secondary education, as well as courses for adults.
